The National Geographic Society has coined a neologism that describes the travel activities that comprise both cultural activities as well as observation of nature. The State of Campeche in the Yucatan Peninsula is very well suited for geotourism. During this 5 nights (6 days) excursion you will have the opportunity to visit two World Heritage sites, the Fortified City of San Francisco de Campeche and the Ancient Maya City of Calakmul, as well as the biodiversity of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and also many other archaeological sites.

Day 1,
Departure from Cancun,
arrival to San Francisco de Campeche

Check in at Cancun Airport (CUN) in ALMA airlines flight No. 532. (Check in time 1:30 pm ). MAYA NATURE welcomes you at Campeche city airport (CPE), upon arrival one of our drivers will transfer you to Hotel Del Mar for check in. In the afternoon you will be free to wander around the historical center of San Francisco de Campeche, one of UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a ride at the city Tram. The only walled city in Mexico, Campeche is a well-preserved example of a harbor town. Its beautifully restored historical center represents a model of Baroque colonial city planning and more than 1,000 buildings of historical value have survived from the Spanish colonial period of the 17th and 18th centuries. Dinner on your own.

Day 2,
Edzna, San José Carpizo, Champoton


After breakfast at your hotel, your guide will meet you for a tour to the archaeological site of Edzna, important ceremonial center that flourished between the VI and IX centurys A.D. After this visit we will go to visit the remains of the San Jose Carpizo hacienda, a fine example of this type of XIX century buildings at the Peninsula. We will continue to Champoton where you will enjoy a lunch of the famous Campeche seafood. At the afternoon we will be Back to San Francisco de Campeche for a visit to the Museum of Archaeology, located at the historical San Miguel Fort, afterwards we will return to Hotel Del Mar  for overnight. Day 3,
Chicanná, Becan


After breakfast, we will leave for Chicanna archaeological site, its name means "The House of the Snake Mouth", and is thought to be part of the great city that was Becan. It owes its name to the facade of structure II, which is richly decorated with an enormous snake mask that symbolizes the sacred mountain. After this visit we will go just across the road to the Chicanna Ecovillage Resort, for check in and lunch. After lunch we will go to Becan, a regional capital that was surrounded by a moat, unique in the Mayan area, and that flourished between years 600 and 1000 of our era. Afterwards we will return at our hotel for overnight. Dinner on your own. B, L.

Day 4,
Mayan Village, Xpuhil, Hormiguero

Early in the morning we'll go to the Mayan Village "20 de Noviembre" where we’ll enjoy a breakfast consisting of typical Mayan dishes, and you will be able to watch the villagers making their crafts of hammock weaving and clothes embroidering. Afterwards, we'll visit the archaeological sites of Xpuhil and Hormiguero, fine examples of Rio Bec style architecture. At Hormiguero we probably could watch spider monkeys. After these visits we´ll return to our hotel in Chicanna for lunch and overnight. Dinner on your own. B,L.

Day 5,
Calakmul, Balamku, San Francisco de Campeche

Very early in the morning, after check out, we will depart provided with a box breakfast, bound to the Calakmul archaeological site, also a World Heritage site. Set deep in the tropical forest of the Tierras Bajas, a Biosphere Reserve, this important Mayan archaeological site played a key role for more than twelve centuries. Calakmul’s outstanding examples of Mayan art provide a testament to the city’s advanced political and spiritual development. After this visit we will procede to Balamku, a site where we find a spectacular modeling stucco façade with policromy, dated at the end of the Early Classic period among 550 to 650 A.D. This frieze is considered one of the most beautiful artistic expressions in the Mayan low lands. After lunch at a local restaurant we will start our way back for San Francisco de Campeche for overnight at Hotel Del Mar. Dinner on your own. B,L.

Day 6,
Departure from San Francisco de Campeche, flight to Cancun

Alter breakfast,at 10:30 a.m. we will pick you up at your hotel for transfer to Campeche airport (CPE) in order to board the ALMA AIRLINES flight No. 532 bound for Cancun Airport (CUN) in order to connect your flight back home. B
